job summary:

Tatum is a national executive services firm and we are conducting a national search on behalf of a current client for a Controller at a rapidly growing company in the South Texas area (between McAllen and South Pedro Island).

The ideal candidate will have 7-10 years of progressive Accounting experience and strong leadership skills with the ability to remain hands on. The Controller will be responsible for providing leadership and coordination of company financial planning, debt financing, and budget management functions while ensuring company accounting procedures are in compliance with GAAP.

Controller Responsibilities:

  • Direct and coordinate company financial planning and budget management functions.
  • Recommend benchmarks for measuring the financial and operating performance of divisions and departments.
  • Monitor and analyze monthly operating results against budget.
  • Prepare debt covenant reporting and manage relationship with lending institutions.
  • Oversee daily operations of the finance department.
  • Manage the preparation of the official annual report of actual revenues, transfers, and expenses.
  • Manage the preparation of financial outlooks and financial forecasts.
  • Prepare financial analysis for contract negotiations and product investment decisions.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal budgetary reporting requirements.
  • Work with department managers and corporate staff to develop five year business plans for the company.
  • Establish and implement short- and long-range departmental goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures.
  • Design, establish, and maintain an organizational structure to effectively accomplish the department's goals and objectives.
  • Serve on planning and policy-making committees.
  • Serve as primary legislative liaison relative to company financial issues
  • Direct financial audits and provide recommendations for procedural improvements
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate department staff.
  • Provide accounting policy orientation for new staff.


Controller Requirements:

  • Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Insurance industry experience REQUIRED
  • Knowledge of automated financial and accounting reporting systems.
  • Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and projections.
  • Working knowledge of short and long term budgeting and forecasting, rolling budgets, and product-line profitability analysis.
  • Ability to motivate teams to produce quality materials within tight timeframes and simultaneously manage several projects.
  • Ability to participate in and facilitate group meetings.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required along with minimum five years of experience in a senior-level finance or accounting position.
  • Public Accounting experience is REQUIRED.

Preferred Experience:

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English PREFERRED
