Accounting Manager - (Accounting & FP&A)

Currently working with a large healthcare organization's research institute that does a variety of projects from discovery science, cohort studies, clinical trail studies, etc. within the scientific world who is looking for an Accounting Manager to head up the accounting & finance functions for the business unit. This is a great business unit that does a lot of great scientific research for the world and this position will handle all aspects of finance and lead a team of 10+ on that team. Position will track all government and private grant money and make sure money is allocated appropriately, handle all the general ledger and operational accounting with team and do any reporting/audits. Qualified candidates will have 5-8+ years of experience including a minimum of 1-2 years in a leadership role. Government Grant experience required. Will take out of public accounting or industry. JOB SUMMARY

The Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing the preparation of the monthly financials (including system office research accounting units, research centers, grants, contracts, affiliate clinical trial programs), account reconciliations and ensuring the general ledger is in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principals. The Accounting Manager provides financial guidance to the research centers and affiliate research programs and reviews various business contracts to determine the financial impact and proper accounting treatment. The position is responsible for overseeing all research accounting functions including the preparation of internal and A-133 audit, schedule of federal awards (SFA), tax schedules and the consolidated financial reporting for research. The Manager assists the Executive Director of Research Support Services and the Chief Research Officer with budget planning and monitoring variances. This position plans, designs and implements improved processes, in order to achieve departmental and system level objectives.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Principal Accountabilities

Financial Statements, Reconciliations, Internal Controls, and Inter Company billing

- Oversees the preparation of the monthly financials to ensure they are in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principals (GAAP).

- Reviews journal entries, reoccurring entries, elimination entries and ensures all subsystems are properly rolling up into the general ledger.

- Oversee the preparation of the monthly actual to budget variance analysis and the explanations provided to management.

- Oversees reconciliation of all research Lawson activities and accounting units

- Manages all research central accounting functions:

general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll transactions, cash, etc.

- Participates in design changes to departmental procedures and internal controls to make the department more effective.

- Provide financial guidance to departmental management by training them to review their financial reports and reviewing contracts to determine the financial and accounting impact.

- Oversee inter company billing process including various affiliate chargebacks (Ex. System Allocation Fees) to ensure it is accurate and efficient.

Financial Reporting

- Works closely with system or regional Controller to insure all financial reporting needs are met

- Prepare various reports, schedules and analyses

- Monitor/review/implement financial policies and procedures

- Interpret and assure compliance with GAAP and government regulations

Coaching and Supervision of Staff

- Supervises all research accounting staff

- Leads educational sessions on technical issues and policy compliance as needed to ensure staff is aware of standards and to keep current with GAAP and applicable federal regulations.

- Develops plans to develop accounting expertise within the department through training and education.

- Provides positive feedback, coaching, counseling, and constructive criticism as needed.

- Keeps job descriptions updated as changes occur in the department.

- Interviews potential staff candidates and makes hiring recommendations.

- Survey departments and affiliates regarding customer services.

Make recommendations on ways to improve customer service and to provide appropriate levels of service, economically.

- Oversee the annual audit preparation package.

- Responds to audit inquiries, which are usually extensive as the accounting for Research complex.

- Supervises preparation of the quarterly and annual financial reporting packages.

- Oversees the preparation of the tax preparation package and responds to queries from Finance.

Operating and Capital Budget Process

- Assists the Executive Director of Research Support Services in overseeing the operating and capital budgeting process.

- Oversees the summarization and upload of the operating budgets.

- Attends meetings with department management during the budget preparation process and

- Assists the Executive Director and Chief Research Officer in determining areas where system research budgets can be reduced so that annual targets can be met.

- Monitors the budgets during the year and provides feedback to system research centers or affiliate research programs that are not meeting their budgets.
