job summary:

Tatum has been asked by a client to help them hire the company's Chief Accounting Officer. This is a small, but growing organization in the real estate industry and the work will offer a considerable amount of variety. This opportunity should give someone great visibility for their work throughout the company. We are targeting individuals who have a background in public accounting and/or a combination of public accounting and corporate accounting experience. We would rely on this individual to hire and build the Accounting department and any necessary processes. The CAO position is accountable for the accounting operations of the company, to include the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, enhance the accuracy and integrity of the company's reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles. This person will also be given the opportunity to support the company's acquisitions efforts through modeling, analysis and recommendations to the investment committee. This is a hands-on role that will have management duties and also individual projects and initiatives.

  • Oversight for all general accounting and financial reporting processes
  • Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures
  • Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department's goals and objectives
  • Preparing quarterly financial statements and ad hoc reporting for executive management
  • Maintain oversight over the cash processing function
  • Interaction with executive management and Operations groups regarding financial and accounting issues
  • Management and support of AP/AR functions and staff
  • Coordinate the preparation of the corporate annual report, financial statement audit and all tax reports and issues (federal, state and local taxes, including sales, use and gross receipts tax)
  • Recommend benchmarks against which to measure the performance of company operations
  • Help with measuring and analysis of company performance and presentation of findings to executive team
  • Real estate industry experience strongly preferred
  • CPA strongly preferred
  • Public accounting experience preferred
  • Strong communicator, experience working directly with executive team, Operations staff along with Accounting organization
  • Good experience with prioritization and managing multiple projects
