job summary:

Our client, a non-profit, is seeking an Interim Senior Accountant. This role is Hybrid to the Arlington, Virginia area and will report directly to the Controller. This role will be responsible for month end close, inclusive of journal entries, preparation of account reconciliations and analyses, and internal financial statements.

  • Performs the day-to-day operations of the treasury and general ledger accounting activities.
  • Execute monthly close process including preparation and review of journal entries.
  • Participate in the monthly, quarterly and annual closing process.
  • Reviews account reconciliations for completeness/accuracy and manages designated accounting
  • processes for financial closings.
  • Ensures detailed review, analysis, reconciliation of balance sheet accounts.
  • Analyzes and reports general ledger account fluctuations.
  • Reconcile the monthly corporate card account and follow up on outstanding expense reports to monitor compliance and timely submission of expense reports.
  • Perform fixed assets accounting and reconciliation functions.
  • Prepare records, schedules, and reports as requested by Accounting/Finance leadership.
  • Maintains and works to enhance accounting policies, procedures and practices.
  • Recommends changes and improvements for accounting and reporting routines to ensure government/regulatory accounting compliance.
  • Research complex accounting issues and present findings and recommendations in both a written and verbal format.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly financial statements and management reports comparing actuals to budget/forecast. Answers questions from managers and provides additional information as needed. Serves as backup in all areas of financial statement preparation.
  • Assists in the preparations of year-end and any other audits. Prepares required schedules for annual financial, A-133 and 403b audits, and Form 990.
  • Respond to external auditor inquiries and provide schedules, research, and data as required.
  • Support finance and accounting team with ad-hoc analysis and grants reports and other duties as assigned.
  • Serves as backup for accounts payable and receivables preparation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

- Bachelor's degree in accounting preferred.

- Experience in a not for profit environment a plus.

- Minimum of 5 years of Senior Accounting Experience

- Experience with federal grants and contracts management required.
