Purchasing Manager

This is a light custom manufacturing, full service company that has an excellent reputation as an employer and is known for their ability to find a way to fulfill a customer's needs. Located in Southwest MN (relo assistance available). Position will be a player/coach role, manage two direct reports and report to the Director of Manufacturing. Salary could be in the 75-90k+ range, depending on experience, plus bonus and great benefits!

The Purchasing Manager will be accountable to:

  1. Deliver on the established goals & metrics for this role.
  2. Own the departmental road map along with your department's opportunity list leveraging processes driving organizational improvement while making it uniquely better and simplified.
  3. Drive vendor compliance to product safety, quality, cost and delivery expectations that reflect continuous improvement in all facets leading to the reduction of total cost of ownership.
  4. Manage and control to optimal inventory levels while enabling revenue growth and balancing of manufacturing requirements, ensuring that dates (IV26) and expectations are timely and accurate.
  5. Lead continuous improvement across all Supply Chain activities, negotiating on behalf of the company, anticipating market dynamics, and mitigate tariff impacts all which impact total cost of ownership. This includes inbound/outbound freight, rebates, cash discounts, cost downs, payment terms, import, etc.
  6. Be the subject matter expert on product safety and social compliance, ensuring all testing, audits & documentation is accurate and current. Ensure company and our vendors meet or exceed regulations.
  7. Proactively managing material shortages providing operations with orders that will be impacted along with defining any substitutions.
  8. LMA/Active Management - Build talent of direct reports. Mentor and coach team members; ensure expectations are set and achieved; elevate team members understanding through educating the "why", the playbook and following workplace discipline.

responsibilities:
  • Studies market(s), price, delivery conditions and trends to determine present and future material availability; as well as engineering developments and manufacturing method improvements from which takes appropriate action for purchasing and inventory control.
  • Interviews and confers with current and prospective suppliers to determine supply capabilities, transportation logistics, inventory control and management, negotiates prices and delivery terms.
  • Keeps abreast of market and product developments and interviews representatives for potential new sources of supply.
  • Studies regular inventory reports to forecast procurement needs; determining which items can be scheduled for regular delivery in order to reduce the necessity for special orders.
  • Selects vendors, assesses vendor capabilities, develops alternate sources, sets and communicates expectations of vendors, and evaluates vendor performance, negotiates price, delivery, terms and rebates.
  • Monitors purchase order claims and contracts for conformance to company policy.
  • Participates with Quality Assurance team members on defective or unacceptable materials with users, vendors and others to determine cause of problem and take corrective and preventative action.
  • Plan for, develop and buy materials, parts, supplies and equipment in a timely and cost effective way while maintaining appropriate quality standards and specifications.
  • Negotiates blanket purchase orders when appropriate and monitors costs during time period.
  • Establishes and maintains good working relationships with vendors. Tries to establish two sources for frequently purchased items.
  • Monitors regular partial inventory audits to verify accuracy of computer records.
  • Evaluates usage trend and modifies reorder points as needed.
  • Keeps accurate records, including price histories and any problems in doing business with particular vendors.
  • Works closely with managers scheduling production to maintain a "just-in-time" level of inventory.
  • Point person for importing of product.
  • Collaborates with warehouse team and leadership to improve flow, identification and ease of material receipt and distribution.
  • Identify means to have vendors do things that will make receiving and warehousing more efficient.
  • Coordinates with Marketing on product colors, attributes and addressing slow moving materials.
  • Subject matter expert on product safety and social compliance, ensuring all testing, audits & documentation is accurate and current.
  • Conform with and abide by all regulations, policies, work procedures, and instructions. Complies with safety and corporate guidelines on business ethics.
