Steve is an engagement partner in Tatum’s Seattle practice whose 30-year career includes serving as chief financial officer (CFO) of high tech, venture-funded and real estate development companies, as well as corporate controller and tax manager of a publicly-held $350 million manufacturing conglomerate. With a passion for spearheading innovative profitable change, Steve has extensive experience in lean finance, tax strategy, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate turnarounds.

Tatum professional highlights include:

  • Interim CFO for a $50 million low-income housing tax credit developer. Led a finance and operations implementation resulting in a reduction in total operating expenses of over 20 percent. Built an entirely new finance department with lean systems, increased corporate borrowing capacity seven times, and successfully negotiated for and oversaw implementation of a lean system for real estate portfolio management.
  • Sell-side advisor for a privately-held skin care products online retailer. Played key role in readying this never-audited company for sale to a private equity group, allowing them to complete the sale before a change in the tax law.
  • CFO for a $1 billion privately-held video game developer and publisher. Automated and streamlined vendor payment systems that absorbed the 10-fold increase in volume with no increase in headcount. Managed credit card processing and developed a gift card program.
  • Corporate controller and tax manager for international New York Stock Exchange manufacturing conglomerate. Developed an innovative merger structure, lead the successful pension investment strategy, managed the negotiations for a $100 million unsecured line of credit and managed a challenging $37.5 million stock offering.
  • CFO and vice president of strategy for a $100 million internet technology infrastructure and services company. Secured four rounds of private equate financing, as well as multiple rounds of venture leases totaling $78 million.

Academic and professional credentials
Steve received a Bachelor of Arts in business administration with an accounting concentration from the University of Washington and a Master of Business in taxation from Golden Gate University. He also completed the Program for Management Development at Harvard University Business School. In addition, Steve is active with The Mountaineers where he is a board member and he teaches climbing, scrambling and navigation. He is a coauthor of the soon-to-be-released 9th edition of world’s best-selling book on climbing.
